TVGA provided Construction Inspection Services to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) for the reconstruction of Walden Avenue and Union Road in Cheektowaga, NY. This project, valued at approximately $28 million, extends from the Como Park Boulevard intersection of Union Road, north to the George Urban Boulevard junction, and on Walden Avenue from the New York State Thruway, easterly to the eastern most driveway of Delta Sonic (1.28 km).
Union Road was widened to a five lane section throughout the project, except under existing bridges, providing two through lanes in each direction and a two way left turn lane. A pedestrian bridge was constructed to carry the proposed Town of Cheektowaga rails-to-trails project over Union Road and the Union Road Bridge over Scajaquada Creek. This stretch of roadway involved the installation of an asphalt concrete pavement riding surface, while the Walden Avenue stretch involved the installation of full depth cement concrete pavement.
In addition, new sidewalks were constructed on both sides of the roads, along with provisions for bicyclists in the form of either curb bike lanes or multi-use paths through the entire length of the project.
TVGA performed detailed construction inspection, on-site field testing of materials and other construction related activities. The TVGA inspection team was led by Ken Strell, Construction Manager. Strell stated that “this was a very aggressive and fast track project that involved the reconstruction of one of the busiest intersections in Western New York. The dedicated Construction Inspection team, consisting of personnel from the NYSDOT, TVGA and Systems and Engineering P.C., have done an outstanding job to ensure the project was constructed in accordance with the approved plans and specifications.”
