TVGA was awarded the Phase I-VI reconstruction design of approximately 2.0 km (1.2 miles) of urban arterial in a unique commercial setting in the City of Buffalo, NY. As a Locally Administered Federal Aid Project with 80% federal funds, this project required close coordination between the City of Buffalo, the New York State Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. Furthermore, the size, scope and nature of this project dictated that the public and business owners be heavily involved throughout the study duration. TVGA was responsible for guiding the City through the required environmental processes, as well as complete the reconstruction design of the corridor.
The project involved development of a recommended alternative that met the traffic and safety needs of the corridor while preserving the historic and aesthetic character of the community. Responsibilities included intersection capacity analyses for eight major signalized intersections along the arterial for the design year traffic conditions. Designed traffic signal plans and optimized the signal timing and phasing sequences.
In June 2003, TVGA was awarded the Gold Award of Excellence for its role in the project by the New York State Association of Consulting Engineers.
