TVGA Consultants Teach Conservation Students about Streambank Stabilization
News Release - November 30, 2006

SILVER CREEK , NY-  Wednesday afternoon, approximately 20 conservation students from the Chautauqua County BOCES and several Village of Silver Creek Officials assisted Engineers from TVGA Consultants with the final phase of the Silver Creek and Walnut Creek Streambank Stabilization Project.  With the cooperation of Mother Nature, volunteers planted 750 Willow and Dogwood branches, and 100 shrubs, along the banks of the two creeks.  These biotechnical plantings were embedded 1 foot into the slope and placed approximately 2-3 feet apart.  The branches will take root, further enhancing the bank’s stability, reducing opportunity for erosion.

TVGA was retained by the Village of Silver Creek to provide professional survey, engineering and construction support services for the stabilization of approximately 850 LF of streambank along Walnut and Silver Creeks. This project was funded through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Funding program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The Village of Silver Creek’s wastewater treatment plant sits adjacent to both Silver and Walnut Creeks, just upstream of their confluence with Lake Erie . The persistent erosion from heavy stream and ice flow has caused a continuous scouring of the west bank of these streams, slowly encroaching the wastewater treatment plant facilities. The Village applied, and subsequently received a grant, for a streambank stabilization project that would arrest the scour action along the west bank of the streams and adjacent to their facilities.

TVGA’s scope of services included the following phases: study; design; construction support; and grant administration. TVGA conducted a study in stream geomorphology to confirm the scope of services for which the Village received grant approval on. During this phase TVGA worked with the involved environmental agencies to receive their concurrence on the design approach, which included a combination of hardened protection and “green” solutions for bank stabilization. The Design Phase included preparation of plans and details, application of environmental permits, and solicitation of bids from area contractors.
